Button Of No Return

John Tilton

Scripture
Proverbs 29:22 An angry person stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered person commits many sins.
Observation
Very few words, but much weight as a warning and insight on the ramifications of losing one’s temper and responding with anger. Thus, the outcome of anger non-tempered bridled or restrained can only result in repercussions and sin that we may wish we could take make.
Application
I saw a program last night on Doctor Phil about a young man who lives with his parents and is unable to control his anger and rage, doing things that he regrets. Although he loves his parents, he is unable to control himself when the button of anger is pushed. All of the “I’m sorry,” “Please forgive me,” and “I wish I could turn the clock back,” often are not enough to resolve the hurt, pain and injury that may have been caused. Thus, our ability to restrain ourselves from anger, even if it is not in a fit of rage, but words and actions that may be more subtle and still have ill-meant and devastating results, is wise and best. I’ve been there where I wish I would have constrained myself until my anger subsided before speaking or acting. I then have to deal with the outcome. Those times that I have been able to think first and react later have resulted in better situations, usually allowing me time to think forward and seek God’s will.
Prayer
Dear Lord, in those situations that I may be stirred to anger by words or the actions of others, please guide and enable me to first stand down with my emotions and feelings, enabling me to think and reason before I react.
