Knowing What Hills To Die On

Richard Waialeale

Scripture

1 Samuel 24:5-7 (NIV)

5 Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe.

6 He said to his men, "The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord's anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord."

7 With these words David rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

Observation

Interesting turn of events - David’s men encouraged David to put away Saul, saying that the Lord is telling him to kill him. But because of David’s close relationship with God, his conscience protects him from doing something stupid, thus choosing his battles wisely - he submits to God and Saul’s authority. By cutting off a piece of Saul’s rob, I believe it was God’s way of striking with the spiritual rod, to protect him. (Psalm 23:4b, “Your rod and Your staff they comfort me.”)

God will do the same for us from time to time. Strike our conscience with His spiritual rod to stop us from walking down the wrong path of destruction. I need to recognize those time when God warns me and I must turn the other cheek.

Application

David shows me there will be times I need to choose wisely and know what hills to die on and what battles to fight. I don’t have to be right, I don’t have to win every battle - only seek God as much as I can to “Know What Hills I Must Die On,’ and choose my battles wisely. My responsibility is to God and to His standards.

Prayer

Father I pray for those times of seeking You with all my heart. The more time I spend with You, the better my decision making and I know You will lead me in the everlasting way. I choose to follow You, In Jesus Name I Pray. Amen.
