The Right Assignment

John Tilton

Scripture

Revelations 2:1-4

“To the angelof the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.

Observation

John communicated keen words to the church of Ephesus. Very succinctly he stated that although the Ephesians were hard workers that persevered in their endeavors; the fact that they did not tolerate the wicked or false apostles, they missed what was most important to the Lord, which was maintaining the love for the Lord that they had when they first became believers. This is the same as being hard and dedicated workers, but missing the assignment. Even extra credit did not count if one was missing the key element or directive of loving the Lord with all one’s heart.

Application

I can relate to this teaching that I can and have in all good intent and purpose, get the assignment wrong; thereby doing a lot of wonderful activity and stuff. However, if I am not following the Lord will and loving Him as my first love, then all that I do is wrong because I focused on and did other then the Lord was calling me to do in loving Him first and with all of my heart. It is so clear that we can do so many good things for the Lord, but if we are not in sync with the Lord on what he is calling us to do, then we’ve missed the boat. It is my task over relationship, and great deeds over time spent with the Lord. He makes it very clear that we will be held accountable.

Prayer

Dear Lord, with life being so busy and matters taking place in such quick time pace, may I never forget, but also be reminded to place you first above all and to know your call on my life, the plans that you have for me and how I best can execute those plans to see your Godly fruition.
