Following An Ungodly Law

John Tilton

Scripture

Daniel 3:4-12 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language, this is what you are commanded to do: As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”

Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. At this time some astrologerscame forward and denounced the Jews. They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever! Your Majesty has issued a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold, and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego—who pay no attention to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”

Observation

Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed and set a law that all people would fall down and worship the image of gold that the King had set up. He continued that any who did not worship the image would be thrown into the blazing furnace. Most people abided by his decree and worshipped the image. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stood fast in honoring the Lord God by not doing so, even though others sold them out. We are able to read further to know that they were thrown in the blazing furnace and survived … yay! What a testimony.

Application

Given the gay marriage legislation that is pending before us and may be considered in a legislative special session, it will have the potential to result in similar situations, where a law change allowing gay marriage will have the potential and probability to limit or take away the rights of the Christians. Taking a stand against the potential law of gay marriage by refusing to participate in gay marriage ceremonies as a business or organization could result punitive ramifications, thereby metaphorically putting many Christians in to a blazing furnace situation. Will we as Christian have the fortitude to stand up for Christ and what is right, rather then what is decreed? Our resolve is to act now to help prevent the legislation of going into law. If it passes, may Christians will be faced with testing situations.

Prayer

Dear Lord, please muster your people to stand up and contact legislators to vote against passing the gay marriage legislation. Guide us to do our part.
