Lessons From Abigail

Calvin Kochi

Scripture

27Now let this gift which your maidservant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who accompany my lord. 28Please forgive the transgression of your maidservant; for the Lord will certainly make for my lord an enduring house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil will not be found in you all your days. 1 Samuel 25:27-28

Observation

Here we find David angry at Nabal heading to kill every male in Carmel for sending his men away empty handed. But Abigail prepared food to take to David hoping to appease him to save the people of Carmel.

Application

What an amazing woman who takes the initiative to defuse the sure destruction of her people. Quick thinking and using the right words turns the anger of David away. There is so much to learn from this conversation with David. There are so many times I have use my words as a destructive force towards other. It wasn’t so much as trying to be destructive with them, but choice of words, matter of delivery, timing all pay apart of the lack of healthy communication. It is something that I am working on developing. It could be so much easier to say that that is the way I am. When I think about Nabal his words brought upon the wrath of David. I wonder if he had truly known that David was heading his way to destroy his people that he would of recanted his words. It is tough lessons to learn, because sometimes the words spoken cannot be taken back.

Prayer

Thank you for this timely message. You remind me that communication is an important toll that we all are given and life and death are found in words.
