The Spiritual Parent I long to be

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. 1 Thessalonians 2:6-7

For you know how, like a father with his children,we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12

Observation

It’s not the honor and applause of people Paul is seeking. His care is genuine and the expressions of parental language speaks towards Paul’s affection for his spiritual family. Gentleness is apparent and needed when Christians are in question or dealing with insecurities. And the exhortation and encouragement as a spiritual father was equally valuable in charging Christ followers to live a life worthy of God.

Application

I’m getting up there in age, not just physically - but thankfully spiritually. Maturing in Jesus to spiritually father the people of God. There is a great brokenness in families which creates insecurities and voids in the souls of people. There are needs for more spiritual fathers and mothers in the faith, who will give their lives to raise spiritually needy and hungry Christ followers.

Here I am Lord. But one of my battles is to keep my heart and eyes on my very own children. Although grown, I want to shepherd them as they and God allows. I wan tot be more gentle in tone, words, reactions and encouraging like Paul was as a spiritual father. Uncompromising and truth bearing - yet full of Jesus love and gentleness.

Prayer

Lord Jesus -
May I take Your yoke upon my heart - to be humble, gentle, brave and truth bearing - to my family and those you’ve called me to shepherd. Help me to speak with grace and gentleness - not eibg impatient and mean - like I am at times (too many times!) Please forgive me for the sin of my impatience and meanness of tone, looks and words! Help Me King Jesus!
