Jephthah's Insurance

Marsha Kochi

Scripture

Judges 11:30 Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed give the sons of Ammon into my hand, 31 then it shall be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.

Observation

Jephthah's vow was made as an attempt to reassure him of Gods favor in this battle. Regardless of our human emotions, our dependence upon the Lord has to be above and beyond. Once a vow is made unto the Lord, it is serious, although God would never ask us to sacrifice our children in this way. Deut. 12:31. It is also said that a vow should be made unto the Lord in gratitude, not for favor.

Application

In desperation, when it seems all is falling apart, do I ask God to get me out of my trials and promise Him all kinds of things, if He just gets me through this, for added insurance? I think He would rather me trust Him with everything that I would have to go through. There are no deals that have to be made, just simply to trust The Lord with whatever the situation is. He knows me and what needs to be done to resolve my problems more than I do.

Prayer

Father, thank you for all that you are teaching me in this season. It's a good lesson on not ever taking my eyes off of You. Around me there are many distractions, but You are faithful, and I must look to You for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds. You are all I need, no added insurance is needed.
