Covered By Christ

Jon Burgess

Scripture
“Who are you?” he asked.“I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemerof our family.” Ruth 3:9
Observation

The Hebrew word forguardian-redeemeris a legal term for one who has the obligation to redeem a relative in serious difficulty (see Lev. 25:25-55). What adds extra depth of meaning to this narrative is that Boaz, a descendent of the line of David becomes foreshadow of what Jesus would do for each one us who come under His covering. He redeemed us, bought us through His sacrfice on the Cross. As we look at what Boaz did for Ruth we see from a new angle what Christ has done for us. When we come to the feet of Jesus He covers us as no one else can.

Application

Covering In Kindness- Boaz responds in kindness to Ruth rather then sending her away. He points to the fact that she could have sought help elsewhere but came to him first. Christ does the same for us. He doesn't shame us for needing Him. He speaks kindly to us and thanks us for seeking Him first.

Covering Our Character- Boaz speaks of her character in the community and wants to keep that intact. To avoid any gossip or slander he instructs Ruth to leave before dawn. Christ does the same for us. He gives us instruction through His Word on how to avoid the appearance of evil and keep our integrity intact. He encourages us on a daily basis to contend for a life of character in a world that seeks to tear it down.

Covering Our Concerns- Even before this meeting Boaz insured Ruth was cared for by leaving extra supply during the harvest and instructing his men to keep her safe. He also sends her back home to Naomi with six measures of barley as a sign they would be provided for. Boaz would not rest until the matter about her future was settled. Christ does the same for us. He never sends us away empty handed. He fights on our behalf and has ensured our future is secure through His sacrifice on the Cross. He cares about what we care about because He cares for us! He doesn't just cover our eternity, he also covers our here and now!

Prayer

In a world where the 24 hour news cycle is driven by uncovering, exposing, shaming, and insulting it's such a refreshing reminder that I am covered by You! You are the shelter I run into. You are the Rock that cannot be moved. Your love for me is pure and true. You call me to cover others in the same way.
