Now That Was Easy

Craig Peterson

Scripture
Deuteronomy 11:26-28 26“See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27the blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today; 28and the curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, [s]by following other gods which you have not known.
Observation
In these verses, Moses boils down the heart of obedience to God. There are two choices set before every person. One leads to blessing. The other leads to curse. The blessing comes when we obey God’s commandments. The curse comes if we ignore God’s commandments and make anything or anyone else more important by doing when is not commanded of God.
Application
When my kids were younger, I can remember telling them to do something and letting them know what the consequences would be if they disobeyed. I also remember changing the rules on them in my frustration. It started like this, “If you don’t clean your room, you can’t have a snack”. When they didn’t obey, I would let my frustration get the best of me and I’d change the rules. The punishment would get worse. God is not that way. Even when the stone tablets were shattered and he carved the 10 commandments in the new tablets, the commandments remained the same. He didn’t get angry and come up with 5 additional commandments. In His frustration, He didn’t decide to make it harder for us. He kept it simple. He meant it when He gave the 10 commandments the first time and He still means it today. Life throws a lot of choices at us every day. Sometimes so many that we can feel overwhelmed. But in fact, God has made it easy. There are only two choices; follow God’s commands or don’t. Just 10 easy things to remember that cover every situation we could ever face. The choice is ours, will we live life our way and face curse, or will we seek blessing by simply memorize the 10 easy rules and follow them?
Prayer
Lord, thank you for making decisions easy. Thank you for not changing things up on us. Would you help me to make following you simple? For me. For my family. For others.
