The Right Assignment

John Tilton

Scripture

Haggai 1:6

You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”

Observation

God clearly was telling the people that their focus and endeavors were diligent, yet a shortfall in terms of their priority of not putting God first, and specifically His call to build the house of the Lord. God makes note that as their priorities were out of sync, the result would be a lack of fulfillment and success, including losing what they worked so hard to obtain, be it the metaphor of a purse with holes in it.

Application

Although the Lord was speaking of placing Him first with a call to build the house of the Lord, these scriptures truly speak to me about knowing the correct assignment from God, having my priorities in order in putting Him first, and also doing what He has called me to, before all of the things in life that I may need and are of use and purpose, but not to come before the Lord in priority and become a distraction in my life.

The multiple “to do’s” each day that I am responsible for and that are placed on my plate by my being a husband, father, grandfather, pastor, leader; have to be in the right place, perspective and priority. These things and responsibilities still need to be done, but “first things first” need to be my understanding of God’s assignments in His Word, in prayer and In answer to His call, followed by the stuff of life. I need to be working on the right assignment and priority each day and I believe that God will then orchestrate more time and better use of my time.

Prayer

Dear Lord, guide that I would not be a “busy body,” doing much and working diligently and hard, but on the wrong assignment or with my priorities out of kilter. May I put you first in all ways and work, knowing that you will return my intent and efforts into success, fulfillment and treasures that I present to you.
