Just Do It!

Craig Peterson

Scripture
I Samuel 16:1 Now the Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have selected a king for Myself among his sons.”
Observation
Samuel was stuck. He had put all his eggs in Saul’s basket. Now Saul was no longer God’s chosen. God had rejected him. But God was not O.K. with Samuel’s funk for long. He told him to get with the program, fill his horn with oil and go find the next one that He had chosen to lead Israel.
Application
We have such a limited view of things. We don’t see what God sees. But God doesn’t want us to wallow in what we thought the plan was. People, even those who we follow and love, will make choices. Sometimes those choices will disqualify them from leading. Even though we feel like we’ve been sucker punched, God says, “don’t worry, I’ve got it under control”. God wants us to fill our horn with oil (to do what we have been called to do) and go where He tells us. All the while, trusting that God has the details under control. In fact, God never wings it. He has a plan, even when we don’t. He just simply asks us to go and He will reveal the rest.
Prayer
Lord, help me to focus on what you have called me to do. Help me to go where you say and do what you ask, no matter what others decide. I want to please you and I want to trust you. Give me the strength and the discipline to do both.
