Reverence & Respect

John Tilton

Scripture
Proverbs 9:10-11 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.
Observation
The Word is so clear and succinct. Fear of the Lord in terms of reverence, respect and obedience are the foundation of which knowledge and understanding of Jesus Christ that all wisdom, good and God’s will can be built on to then flourish through our lives in hope, peace and success.
Application
I often used to think that garnering wisdom begins with what I do and what I can obtain in learning and experience. Yet, I love how the Word teaches us that wisdom begins with fear of the Lord; in that fear in terms of reverence and respect for God’s power and authority would guide us to think with obedience to God before we speak and do. Furthermore, that knowledge of the Holy One, Jesus Christ would be the example and lessons that give us understanding to use hand-in-hand with our reverence and respect for the Lord. When we have reverence and respect working together with the knowledge of God’s Word, we have both the lessons and mentors speaking to us with the obedience to God’s will keeping and guiding us in His will that we would be able to minimize conflict, concerns and challenges. When challenges to come, and they will, it is again the understanding, reverence and respect of the Lord that will give us the perseverance and fortitude that we need to see the hope and light that is before us.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for breaking down the usual complexity of wisdom and understanding to be so simple and clear … reverence and honor to you, studying and knowing your word with a heart and intent of obedience. May it so be in me.
