Scripture

Psalm124:1-8

If the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us, they would have swallowed us alive When their anger flared against us; the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away. Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be torn by their teeth. We have escaped like a bird from the fowler's snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.

Observation

King David wrote this Psalm when he and his followers were in grave danger. The scripture doesn't say exactly what he was going through or the specific circumstances that he was in, but the phrasing describes the desperateness of the situation. The Lord delivered David and his companions from the danger and David clearly acknowledges it was the Lord, and him alone, that provided a way through the difficulties. It is important to note that David, as the leader, did not raise himself up as being responsible for getting his group through the difficulty (as many leaders would do). He praises the Lord, "our help is in the name of the Lord".

Application

Reading this Psalm after having just returned from the "footsteps of Jesus" tour, I am reminded of God's grace and unending mercy. Having seen first hand the bleak and unforging landscape that David traversed, and knowing how David walked with the Lord, his surrender to God's call on his life. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. Just as David relied upon The Lord many years ago, he is their to live in our lives today. All we have to do is make that deliberate choice to allow God into our hearts and choose to follow him.

Prayer

Dear Lord I choose to follow you, to make you the "Lord" of my life. You are so faithful and I can't thank you enough for the love and mercy you pour out on me every day. Help me to be the man, father and husband you've created me to be. Amen
