On My Own

John Tilton

Scripture
Joshua 9:14-15 The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath.
Observation
Joshua and the Israelites were deceived by the Gibeonites as they posed and played a ruse on them making believe that they were from a land far away and therefore not a threat to the Israelites in order to save themselves from potential and probably destruction. The Israelites went through the physical test and review of them, but did not seek the Lord. Subsequently, the Israelites made a pact with the Gibeonites. They were later to find out their mistake and felt very foolish.
Application
God has shown and affirmed Himself recently to be very faithful and provisional to our family and our church. In hindsight, the fruits of my/our prayers might not have been realized if prayers were not lifted up to the Lord. We often have apprehensions to ask God for advice because we often don’t hear an audible clear resounding voice. However, if we will recall God’s miracles and prior blessings and provisions in our life, we can be prompted to lift up our desires and situations to Him. He will speak in many ways if we are earnest in our prayers, devotions and waiting upon Him. They key is to remember to take all things of importance to Him as well as rejoicing in His goodness and greatness. My initial response is often to try and figure things out and use my best review, analytical approach and discernment, which is good. But I must not forget to always seek the Lord. What I don’t understand or perhaps see physically. I believe will be covered by Him in the spiritual.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for the reminder that one of the most important things in my success and walking in your will, will be seeking your first and not doing things on my own.
