Mouth or Heart Action?

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

And his armor-bearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish. Behold, I am with you heart and soul.”

1 Samuel 14:7

Observation

Saul’s son Jonathan was eager to take on the Philistines. It wasn’t like he was looking to be the hero of his tribe or make a name for himself. Jonathan and his armor bearer left their camp unbeknown to their fellow warriors. You would expect the armor bearer to make the commitment as he did with Jonathan. But the trust displayed and the heart of loyalty is undeniable.

It’s from his heart that this armor bearer, covenanted with Jon. “I am with you heart and soul” he says. As if to say, I’m not just with you for companionship or for battle, but “my mind and heart and soul and being” is yours.

Application

I would really, really like to have and display this kind of covenant with Jesus. As His armor bearer, I would like to think that I’m fully committed in heart, soul, life, being! But I’m feeling childish thinking that my commitment is conditional. I’m so circumstantial. When things go well or “my way” I seem to act and live more “all in.”

If I were called to fulfill a monstrous assignment, would I be as loyal and trusting of the Lord, as the armor bearer was with Jon? Would I be all mouth action or would I be all in with all my heart? I’m examining and questioning the depth of my commitment and sincerity to the Lord.

Prayer

Dear Father. I know you love me. I mean I know you love me and I’m not less loved because of my weak walk and mindset at times. Thank you for testing me. For testing my commitment. Oh God...help me to pass the test of being a man of God fully committed to you in heart and soul. May my mouth match my heart commitment! Thanks you again and again for your grace and peace!
