Hiding, Seeking & Finding

Jon Burgess

Scripture

15While David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that Saul had come out to take his life. 16And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. 17“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.” 18The two of them made a covenant before the Lord. Then Jonathan went home, but David remained at Horesh. 1 Samuel 23:15-18

Observation

David was hiding and Jonathan came to seek him out. Jonathan was a true friend in that he risked his own life to help David. He didn't offer him cute sayings, false promises or spiritual platitudes. Jonathan did for David the best thing anyone can do for a friend who is in need... he turned David towards the Lord. David was hiding, he needed to start seeking, he needed to find his strength in God again! Jonathan knew the only way David could make it through this trial was through the supernatural strength of God Almighty. A friend in need is a friend indeed who points that friend to the King of Kings!

Application

Right now there are people in our lives who are hiding in caves of fear, shame, sorrow, weariness. They need a friend to seek them out. Not to fix them. Not to condemn them. Not to try to be their salvation, but to turn them back to their source of salvation in Christ. Turn their eyes away from all that they are overwhelmed with and help them find their strength again. Some won't find Him until we find them! Some who are hiding right now need to start seeking again. Don't wait for someone to find you. Find the One who made you! I humbled myself this past weekend in the face of a demanding weekend of responsibility and ministry and asked for prayer. I stopped hiding. I started seeking help and I found my strength through Christ and those who were praying for me. Admit your isolation and find your inspiration in the the fresh consolation that you are not alone!

Prayer

Lord, thank you for those You have put around me who cover me in prayer and encourage me to find my strength in You. I pray that You would give me eyes to see those who are hiding and have stopped seeking a way out. I pray that they would find their strength in You again! No matter how intense their situation that they would know in a new way You are with them and will bring them through this!
