Sons & Daughters of the Most High

Tim Savage

Scripture

4But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. 5God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. 6And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” 7Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. Galatians 4

Observation

Before Christ came to earth to die for our sins, people were bound to follow the Old Testament laws. As we read through Deuteronomy we see just how many laws there were: put in place to protect the people from all kinds of threats from disease, warfare, hygiene, agricultural, animal husbandry – laws to educate people and help them survive and very tough environment. (As a sidebar, isn’t interesting that some people back then lived to such an old age, much older than our life expectancy today). Jesus changed everything from a law-based relationship to a faith-based relationship. As His children we aren’t judged by whether we follow the letter of the laws, but rather, whether we love and believe in the Son of God.

When we enter in to a father-child relationship with Christ the heavens and all of its power becomes available to us through His love and care for us. It is so powerful for me to think of my kids and my hope and dreams for them and what I would do for them in order to see them live in the joy of the Lord. My heart overflows for them – I provide for them, I correct and discipline them, I extend grace and mercy to them and I give them my unconditional love and support. This is exactly how God loves me and that’s so powerful.

Application

As I soak that in, my response to Him should be to sacrifice everything in order to be in His will. Easier said than done. Why do I follow the desires of my heart, why do I sin and become proud, stubborn and obstinate? When my children have an attitude, sin or disobey the rules I get angry and I’m heartbroken because I love them so much. So it is with our Heavenly Father. When I think of my relationship with God in those terms how could I not desire to die to myself so that He may live in me. I want to give my whole life to the Creator, the Author and the Finisher who loves me so much that He gave His only Son to die for me, so that I may have eternal life with Him.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please forgive me of my sins and guide and direct me to a closer relationship with You. Thank You for loving me unconditionally, may I never take that for granted. May my heart be broken when I fall, so that I continually strive to serve only You.

In Jesus name,

Amen
