Scripture
2When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. 3But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. Matthew 6
Observation
This morning after our 6am School of Church Leadership class – yes I said 6am! My buddy, Kai, and I went foraging for breakfast. I ended up pulling in to the parking lot of the Original Pancake House and as I got out of the car Kai started talking to a young man. As I walked up to their conversation Kai said that he wanted to take this guy to McDonalds to buy him a meal. He didn’t make a big deal about it, just befriended him, paid for his food, said “God bless you,” and we went on our way. We didn’t post a video on facebook, a picture on instagram or a tweet on twitter (of course I’m posting it in this journal – but only as an example J); Kai just did what he felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to do. Simple.
Application
While there were lots of great lessons in this morning’s reading, I’m reminded that some things aren’t complicated – we can make them complicated – but really most things just require a quiet submission and following of the instructions given to us in His word. Kai’s gift to this guy wasn’t earth-shaking and may not change his world forever, but a quiet act of kindness, done to glorify Jesus, certainly speaks louder than words.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, May I follow You with simple obedience. We are naturally defiant and demand answers to things we don’t understand. The problem is that we are finite, physically and mentally, You are not. I want to be used as a light and an example to help others find their way to You. In Jesus name, Amen
