Above all other gods

Rod Shimabukuro

Scripture

For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. Psalm 135:5-6

Observation

The opening stanzas of this psalm communicate the mighty majesty of God. The God above all other gods. There are other gods being worshiped, referred to later in this Psalm. These are gods or idols made with hands that cannot speak, hear or see - contrasting the great God who creates and sovereignly rules over the heavens and the earth. It’s this God - who does whatever He pleases, not bound or limited by anything or anyone!

Application

I want to recognize the Lord, as the great God in my life. Yet there are “other gods” that want to exist and grow in my heart and life. These gods aren’t satanic or birthed by demonic forces. The gods I’ve been dealing with are idols of my sinful character...like jealousy, pride, pursuit of pleasure or the desire to be applauded. How carnal and sinful are these idols. Yet I can confidently walk in the increasing knowledge of my Great God - who does whatever He pleases - not what satisfies me. I’m reminded that I need to be careful not to place “other gods” above The Great Lord!

Prayer

Hi Daddie God. Please forgive me for creating, growing idols and other gods in my life, mind and heart. I’m so lame -yet Your so Great! Thank You again - and again - for Your great love and grace to overlook, forgive and help me to see above
