Mold Me Oh Lord

John Tilton

Scripture
Jeremiah 18:3-10 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the Lord came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.
Observation
The Lord taught a very key and important lesson as to how we can and often will be molded like clay by the Lord for His master plan and like a specific piece of pottery in the diverseness array of His gallery of pottery. I love the metaphor of us being molded by the Master himself, able to be remolded as He sees fit. Furthermore, He goes on to tell us that Israel can be reformed by His command and that the reformation often will be a result of obedience or lack of it. We are indeed like a piece of clay that can change shape and height as the hands of the potter adds or decreases pressure as is with the pressures of life, and shapes us as a vessel that may even change it use and intention due to the shape we are molded in. Even the capacity of our pot and be changed by the potter’s hand.
Application
I am prompted to remember that I should see myself like a piece of clay that starts out often as a simple block, that the Lord through His intentional pressure and shaping can mold me into the right design for His purposes. I want to be mindful that the journey on the potter’s wheel can be long and changing, where my call and role may be changed for His purposes. That while on the potter’s wheel, events can take place that may mar me or affect me that the potter may choose to change my design as I learn and grow into a new character and purpose. Subsequently, I know that in order for me to be tempered into a firm foundation, I may have to be placed in the potter’s oven where the heat of life’s events will be used to transform me from clay into a solid ceramic art piece that can also be used for His purposes.
Prayer
Dear Lord, I am a piece of clay awaiting your continuance to work me and mold me into the wonderful and useful art piece of pottery that you can use for your purposes. I know that for my best, you may allow me to be place in the potter’s kiln to transform me into a firm, yet glistening piece of ceramic art. I pray that I will always be mindful of how you work and mold me. May I be pliable and shapeable so that you can mold me with ease.
