All In On Obedience

John Tilton

Scripture

2 Kings 10:30-31

The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” Yet Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.

Observation

As I read through the chapter of the accomplishments of Jehu that God called him to handle, Jehu was 100% committed and successful in what God called him to do with Ahab’s family and the servants of Baal. What God called Jehu to do was of no easy task; in fact it was bloody and messy, and extreme in many ways including a massacre of Baal’s servants. Yet, Jehu was not careful to be obedient to God’s law and therefore allowed the sins of Jeroboam to continue and subsequently cause Israel to commit sins against the Lord. He did so well in one area, yet was lax in another that didn’t seem as demanding, yet still required obedience. It was also an area of his life that was more personal.

Application

This situation really speaks to me to be careful in that I can accomplish much for the Lord in His call on my life in ministry or in my work. Yet, I need to be obedient and careful in my personal walk with the Lord in who He has called me to be as John Tilton, and what He expects of me in terms of obedience to His will and Word. It reminds me of David winning the many wars but failing in His personal obedience to the Lord. Yet David remained a man after God’s own heart. I want to be a man after God’s heart and to also find the discipline to be obedient in all ways that God has called me to be obedient to.

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for showing me what can be a clear disparity of doing what you ask of me on one hand, yet being lax in obedience on another. Please guide me to be discerning when I am slipping in my obedience, as well as to be disciplined to forge beyond sin and disobedience.
