Valley of Ben-Hinnom

Richard Waialeale

Scripture

Jeremiah 7:32 & 34 (NIV)

32 So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.

34 I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness and to the voices of bride and bridegroom in the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, for the land will become desolate.

Observation

Is today’s society moving towards God or away from God? The answer is it’s moving away from God.

The way Jeremiah describes the society he’s living in, is the same thing happening around us today. The Bible then talks about the valley of Slaughter or Ben-Hinnom, or Gehenna - is synonymous with hell. Like Jeremiah’s time, we’re living in a crazy, chaotic world, and many people will end up in some place like Topheth or hell.

My observation today is that no matter how messed up our society is, and no matter which way the majority of this world is heading - God still sends a representative to warn the people. God chose Jeremiah while he was still in the mothers womb. God will use anyone willing to follow Him to be an ambassador for Jesus.

God says, “Whom shall I send?”

Application

I say, “Here I am Lord - Send me.”

Someone once said, “When you’re walking through the fire. Never look at what you’re walking through, but look at who you’re walking with.” I’m walking with God, and God is everywhere, even in the valley of Slaughter or Ben-Hinnom. I want to be a representative for Jesus no matter what my assignment. Some of the ways to avoid looking at the fire is to keep my eye’s on Jesus. Go back to Jesus and think about all the times Jesus became real to me. Jesus is the answer. He is the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him.

Prayer

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, Lord You are with me.” Thank you Lord for comforting me and bringing peace and wholeness inside that I might do Your will. In Jesus Name. Amen.
