Can You Hear Me Now

Calvin Kochi

Scripture

9And Eli said to Samuel, “Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10Then the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:9-10

Observation

Eli response was I did not call, you my son, lie down again. But after being awakened again and again Eli realizes that Samuel is not crazy, he really is hear something and it is not the boy’s imagination. He then says to him go lie down and if you here the voice calling you say, speak Lord for your servant is listening.

Application

This is a good reminder for me that God is still speaking, and am I attentive to His voice. I know that there have been times that God was speaking and I didn’t pay attention to Him. There were also times that I believed he was speaking and it wasn’t Him. There were times that I wanted God to do what I wanted Him to do, and not asking what do you want me to do. I believe we can have all kinds of motivations for hearing God voice. Unlike Samuel I don’t think that he wanted or was even expecting to hear Gods voice. Yet he ends up being told to say Yes Lord speak you servant is listening. I think that Samuel hearing the Lords voice was because of his heart, and that he didn’t have a motive to want to hear God. I notice that when I am expecting to hear He is silent, and when I least expect God to speak He speaks.

Prayer

Thank you Lord that your voice can still be heard and have the right heart and attitude play an important part of hearing you voice. Lord continue to speak to me you servant is listening.
