Living Life After Christ

John Tilton

Colossians 3:15-17

Let the peace of Christrule in your hearts, since as members of one bodyyou were called to peace. And be thankful.16Let the message of Christdwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdomthrough psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanksto God the Father through him.

In this Chapter, Paul teaches and encourages the people of Colossae to live as Christ would have them live, putting away their sinful carnal nature and character of man and following Christ in heart, His will and obedience. These scriptures in particular give us the tools that will remind, guide and strengthen us in how to garner the wisdom from the Lord through His psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit, that we would in turn present it back unto the Lord in worship with gratefulness in our hearts.

I often find myself reading something very profound, which then becomes great head knowledge. However, how do I make what I read applicable and a continuous action step in my life? It’s very clear that our time in His Word that include the psalms, hymns and songs that bring the treasures of the Bible to life, and by way of us singing them in song, they become applicable tools of living life in Christ. I realize why King David sang and danced. In this way, the beautiful lyrics of the Lord come alive in our spirit as we receive from the Spirit. For some people including myself, depending on a certain state of mind we are in, or a situation we are facing, music and song will open the doors for us to understand and be influenced. The Bible is the comprehensive book of Life that teaches us, guides us, mentors us and here we see encourages us in the ways of the Lord through the beautiful songs of the Lord.

Dear Lord, I thank you for giving me yet another spiritual tool grow me in your Word and ways; through your psalms, hymns and songs. I know that I can learn and grow in so many ways from you Word. It is often through song that your Word will reach me in the particular state of mind that I may be in.
